Positive News! The Antarctic Ozone Layer is Healing

BBC has reported that the thinning in the ozone layer above Antarctica is starting to heal. Scientists said that in September 2015 the hole was around 4 million sq km smaller than it was in the year 2000 – an area roughly the size of India. The gains have been credited to the long term phasing out of ozone-destroying chemicals. The Ozone layer made of O3 absorbs most of the harmful UV rays coming from the Sun thereby protecting and shielding our earth. Its depletion was a major environmental concern.

“It’s a big surprise,” said lead author Susan Solomon, an atmospheric chemist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in an interview with Science magazine. “I didn’t think it would be this early.” READ THE SCIENCE MAGAZINE REPORT HERE
